Problems with file access or permissions

I am using XP Home Edition and I have downloaded SP2.

I have a problem opening a Word Doc, it says it is not a word doc but I know
it is. Also, when I attempt to delete the file anyway I get the following
error message:

"Cannot delete filename: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not
currently in use.
However, the disk is neither full nor write-protected and the file is not in
use by anyone else. "

I have followed the Microsoft article 298345 anyway, I am the Administrator!

and I have followed advice in Article ID 159199 too.

Both to no avail.

Any ideas please?

I have looked at this site but before I do one of the suggestions it I find
that the problem applies to more than one file, and maybe over several
folders too.

Any further ideas please?
