Problems with CD-ROM, Cable Internet in XP

I recently deleted a huge amount of adware with AdAware and installed
several security updates for WinXP (SP1) before I had these problems
and now I wonder if it's a virus or some missing files that were
deleted during those processes:

My cable internet connection is recognized in windows as being enabled
and online. When I unhook the cable to my ethernet card, a bubble pops
up informing of the disconnection. I can upload, but not download. I
have ran IPconfig and other dianostics, but can find no problems. I
have tried reinstalling the drivers to the ethernet card, but I still
cannot load any webpages.

My 2nd problem is more severe. The cd-rom doesn't recognize any discs.
When I put a disc in, the drive doesn't spin and in Explorer when I
click on the drive, informs me to insert a disc when one is present.
This isn't just a windows problem since I also can no longer boot from
my winxp cd on startup.

I'm thinking this is a virus, but I have no idea how to fix it now
that I cannot access the internet, read cd's, or even boot off of my
winxp cd.

Any ideas?? Thanks!
