Here's my latest issue:
I have a Compaq running Windows XP Home. I have two printers, a new
scanner, an extrernal hard drive, and a router hooked up to it. Recently
when I turn the external hard drive on to backup or access files, it has
begun this strange auto detect of hardware thing.
About every five minutes, whether I am accessing the ext hard drive or not,
it begins with telling me the connection to one of my printers has been lost
(it has remained off through the whole process), when I click ok on that, it
tells me twice that I have a high speed USB device plugged into a non high
speed outlet (which I do, both the scanner and the ext hard drive. I do not
have a high speed USB outlet), and begins to autorun my external hard drive.
This is similar to what happens when I turn on the computer or turn on one or
more of the devices but seems to be happening on its own every few minutes.
If I am attempting to access my external hard drive, it shuts down whatever
I am working on before it does all this. It does not happen when the
external hard drive is off. However, it makes it impossible to use the
external hard drive.
I have not installed SP2, mainly b/c when I tried it a few weeks ago, it
would get to a certain point on go no further. Then Windows Update was
telling me it was there but it would not completely install so I know it is
not. Another issue or part of the problem?
The only other change I have made recently is getting the new scanner. I
did have a old scanner that was attached through the parallel port. This one
is USB.
Is there any way to turn these things off? Do I have to acknowledge EVERY
time I try to use a high speed item in a non-high speed port that I know this
and there is no way to fix it? Can I turn off autorun for the external hard
drive? Why would it appear to start this over every few minutes as if I just
turned the computer on instead of taking my 'OK"s and not trying it again?
2 spyware programs and antivirus program checks out.
Any ideas? As I write this, it has happened six times, causing me much
frustration!
Thank you!
Donna
