problems when sending attachments from other programs

When I go to "Send" "as attachment" a document etc from another program, the
normal outlook email template opens fine. But when I try to send the email it
will not go. When I try to open Outlook it will not open and checking the
taskmanager indicates that Outlkook is already running.

Current workaround: I save the attachment and the email (File Save) I then
close the email, go to task manager stop the Outlook task, then open Outlook,
this then opens outlook and I then see the saved email in my "inbox" I then
open the email and send it.

This is way to much work for something so simple. Anyone have any ideas on
what is wrong?

Test 1 : with Outlook open the email (word doc ) went fine.

Test 2: with Outlook closed the email template was generated and then I hit
"send" . I then tried to open Outlook to check the email and received "The
operation failed" error message. Check the task manager and the Outlook . EXE
is present and running. Ended task and then opened Outlook. The email I
prepared was located in the outbox waiting to be sent. I also note that the
email did not "send" automatically when Outlook opened. I have it set to send
and receive on opening. The icon next to the email indicates a picture of
an envelope with the letter outside it. I then opened the email and hit send
again and the email went.

Whats happening??

Just an added interest point.

I just tried the same test on my wife's laptop computer running outlook 2003
11. 6359. 6360 SP1 and its the same problem.

One of our desktops using Outlook version 11. 6359. 6360 SP1 works fine.
I will go and check the kids computers (one laptop and one desktop) to see
if they also have this problem.

At this time its the two laptops only

Just updated one of the laptops to Outlook 2003 (11.6359.6408) SP1 still same
problem.

I'm not sure what is happening here but it seems it would be best to keep
Outlook running.
With Outlook security in place you usually need authorisation for another
application to send from Outlook. That might be the problem here - you are
missing the authorisation.
The suggestion to keep Outlook open is a workaround to avoid the problem and
not a solution.
