PROBLEMS UPDATING HOLIDAYS IN OUTLOOK 2000

Public holidays beyond 2002 were not showing up in Outlook. After doing an archives search, I thought I had the problem licked when I discovered that I had to install OutHol.exe. I've done that according to Microsoft's instructions, but still cannot get any holidays beyond 2002.

I downloaded OutHol.exe to the Desktop and installed it from there, and it appeared to work OK. However, when I look at outlook.txt (there is no outlook.hol), it has not been updated. Any ideas?

Two non-standard aspects that may have some effect:
1. my .pst file is not in the MS default location, as I moved it to another folder some time ago (to facilitate backups); and
2. I've just noticed that there appear to be some duplicate MS folders -- I have Program Files\Microsoft Office 2000\Office\Outlook.exe (which is the one activated by the desktop icon) and Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe. The files appear identical and are both dated 16/12/98.

Could either of these 2 non-standard aspects be causing the Holiday problem? And, how do I uninstall the duplicate version of Outlook? (There is only one MS Office showing as installed in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs).

You should only have one outlook.exe - and the holidays file didn't install
it.

Did you also go to tools, options, calendar, holidays and add them? Outlook
should find the right file.

Thanks for your reply, Diane.

However, I realise the holidays file did not install the additional outlook.exe -- I wondered whether the additional outlook folders might have had something to do with the failure of OutHol.exe. And, yes, I did add the holidays several times through Tools>Options>Calendar etc, and all that happened was that the holidays up to 2002 were duplicated (and triplicated) and I had to delete them manually.

I am hoping to find out:
1. why OutHol.exe did not instal properly (when it said it did);
2. whether it is possible that either of what I called the 'non-standard aspects' in my earlier post may have contributed to the problem with OutHol.exe; and
3. how to uninstall the duplicate version of Outlook.

This means it did not work or it was looking at the wrong holiday file.

Did you install Outlook that came from a PDA? Or install two versions of
Office? They *should* all use the same folder, but stranger things have
happened. According to the inf file in the exe (you can open outhol.exe
using WinZip or similar program) - it looks for the install path in the
registry:

[OutlookDir]
HKLM,"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\InstallRoot","Path",,"c:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE9"

You can use that to figure out which folder is the right one. Or search the
hard drive for outlook.txt. Do you have more than one? Do any have the new
holidays?
However, when I look at outlook.txt (there is no

Where was this outlook.txt? Since it's not updating, and assuming it's in
one of your office folders, this is probably the one outlook is using.

If you have a zip program installed, extract then copy the outlook.txt file
to that folder to replace the existing one. If you don't have a zip program
installed and Window's compressed folders won't open the exe, use search to
look for a copy in the temp folders and hope this is one time windows
doesn't clean up after itself. <g>

Unless you need the space, I'd probably let well enough alone and not bother
uninstalling anything - depending on what all is in the second directory, it
might break other programs. But if you decide to uninstall, do it using
add/remove programs.
