I am having problems with word 2003. I have had Microsoft Office 2003 since I installed XP Pro about 3 years ago with no problems did one clean install last year everything was good until last month & for no reason nothing worked right like a virus of some kind.

None of the files open by themselves, I have to right-click and select Word or WordPad or something new called WordPad MFC Application. If I just select it the file opens in WordPad.

They used to work, I could open several at the same time before but not now & the files are different there is no selection for the file showing folders in the file, you have to double-click the folder to see what is in it. You cannot rename any of the files it is not on the menu anymore.

I have done all the cleaning SpyBot Adaware, AVG, etc.

Nothing works I even left this at the Word Newsgroups and no one could help they agreed that WordPad MFC Application has something to do with it.

Any ideas I am also running XP Pro SP2

The "something new" is SP2 Wordpad. If you look in Program
Files\WindowsNT\Accessories you will see wordpad.exe. Right click on it
and look at the Properties\Version and you will see WordPad MFC Application.

My guess is that you may have installed SP2 three months ago when your
problem started. If not that, some other software package was installed
at that time which somehow changed the MFC DLLs used by WordPad. Here is
an example of what might have happened although I don't see a reference
to Word 2003. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/886264/

If the above fits, you should see if there are updates for Office2003.
Certainly contact Microsoft directly for help if the SP2 upgrade is the
cause of the problem.
