PROBLEMS STARTING EXCEL

Has anyone gotten around this problem?
1. I can't start excel from my desktop or from
Start/Programs/Excel; although I've been able to do this
for years.
2. I have to open an existing Excel Document which gets
the program running, then open a new file, and everything
runs as if I had nothing wrong. But I don't want to go
through all that every time I want to run Excel.
3. Microsoft X/P gives me a dialog that ends up saying
that I need to re-install the program with the Microsoft
disks. Well, I bought this Dell 4500 with all of the
basic programs already installed and can not locate the
disks that were sent with the computer.

Does anyone know how I can get the program, which actually
exists "in the computer", (see item2) to start running
normaly, like (see item1)?

You could rightclick on the excel shortcut under
windows start button|programs|excel and see where it points.
(It sounds like it's not pointing to the correct location for excel.exe.)

You can use windows start button|search to look for excel.exe and note the
location and verify/correct what's in the program's shortcut.

If the shortcut still doesn't work, but everything matches, you can try
reregistering excel.

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.

You may want to give Dell a call. Someday you may need those disks.

If you have Excel 2002 (XP), you could also try going to
Tools; Options; General tab and Unchecking Ignore Other
Applications.

Is it possible that your Excel is showing minimized on
your task bar? Then when you go to open a document it
becomes full screen? I run into that quite a bit where I
work and you have to RIGHT click on the icon on the
taskbar and choose Restore or Maximize depending on your
Office/OS version.
The best I can determine this happens when you shutdown
your PC while an Office application is minimized on the
taskbar. Good Luck!
