Problems setting up network

Okay, I've struggled with this for a week and I don't seem to be getting anywhere..

I'm trying to establish a home network, one wired connection and one wireless, using XP home. I have a D-link DI-624 4-way router with a desktop connected via ethernet adapter and a laptop with a wireless connection. I can't get either computer to access the other. Instead I get a message that I don't have access to the other computer and to contact my network administrator (which is me I guess). Both computers have access to the internet, through a cable modem, and there doesn't seem to be any problem with the wireless connection. I can ping the router and both machines can ping each other using their IP address and both machines can ping themselves using their computer name but neither can ping the other using their computer name (they should be able to do that shouldn't they?). I've turned off all of the firewalls on the computers and in the router and I'm not using any encription at all

I'm wondering if it might be a naming problem. I've changed the name of each computer several times and changed the name of the workgroup and the names show up on the opposite computer but I still don't have access

One other note, I did initially get the notebook to access the desktop once and I could share printers and everything. However, when I took the notebook out of range of the wireless and brought it back I lost access and never got it back again

Help!!!! Thanks

The first question I always ask is if you can ping. if not, compare ipconfig
/all or post it here. or you can go to http://www.ChicagoTech.net
do-it-yourself tools to do the troubleshooting.

Here's both of my ipconfig files. I had a IT come over to my house yesterday for three hours and he couldn't figure out what was wrong. His final suggestion to me was to reinstall XP. I'd really like to avoid that if I could

I too seem to have this same highly frustrating problem.
I even went to the lengths of buying a whole new wireless
network, which I installed today.
But yet again I can't access one computer from another.
The only change now is that they do acknowledge each
others existence. Before, if I opened the Workgroup
Computers folder each computer would only list itself.
Now both of my computers list each other as well, but
still get the permissions error if I try to access them.

You will require all the workgroup names to be the same
to start with.

The card on the laptop has a SSID and the Router or
Access point has a SSID They need to be the Same. If
your using encryption you will require the same HEX
Address on both the access point or router and the laptop
card.

Actually, I've turned off all of the encryption and the SSID's are both the same. No firewalls anywhere on either of them. Network name is consistent on both machines

I've narrowed it down to a naming problem because I can access both computers using an IP address and I can map a network drive to a shared folder on the other computer but neither of the computer names work for anything. Neither computer shows up in the others Network Place folder or when I try to view the workgroup

Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Per my previous post, don't use the Windows machine names to establish your shares. They are unreliable at best. Instead, use the IP addresses for the machines where the shares exist (i.e \\192.168.0.2\printer). You should even be able to set these machines up with reserved IP addresses so that they will never change but you still run DHCP. These connections will be more reliable and function like any other share.
