Problems saving documents

We are having some problems saving Office documents on our file server.
When some of our users try and save documents they are getting errors
saying that there is a sharing violation, because the document is in
use. The users have 'Full Control' over the folders when I go in and
look at the Effective Permissions tab for the user. Does anyone have a
suggestion on where I should look for the problem?

The exact error: Your changes could not be saved to 'Filename.xls'
because of a sharing violation. Excel has created a temporary file with
your changes preserved, called '1DEA5310'. You can save the temporary
file as a new name or lose your changes and all future changes.

Thanks in advance for your help.

These articles are describing a problem while opening the documents,
when I experience my problem while I am trying to save the document. I
been looking on the knowledge base and can't seem to find anything
related to this problem.

I don't think it is an application problem, because we have other file
servers that don't have any issues when the same users try and access
the files. I can't see how it is a file permission problem, because
when I look at the Effective Permissions the users have Full Control of
the files.

Is it possible it could be a network connectivity problem? If so, where
should I look to try and find where this issue is coming from?

Thanks for your help

You may have to do some detective work in order to home in
on the cause. Here is what I would do in this case:
- Go to a machine that exhibits the problem.
- Run nthandle.exe (www.sysinternals.com) or oh.exe (Win2000 Resource Kit)
to see what files are currently open.
- Try to rename the problem file from a Command Prompt.
- Create & open some other file in the same shared folder, to test
network connectivity.
- Try a "save as" in order to save the document to a different file
name in the same location.
- Try to open the same document from a different workstation.
- Scan the machine for viruses, using the latest pattern file.

Some of these tests may give you pointers that may help you
resolve the problem.

Take a look at KB 291070 XL2002: "Your Changes Could Not Be Saved" Error
While Saving to a http://support.microsoft.com/?id=291070. It contains some
know causes and resolutions/workarounds for them.
