Hi there - I am having a problem receiving emails. I am afraid that I am not
very competent at sorting out problems on my pc - my daughter usually helps
but has just abandoned me to university and so I have been left trying to
troubleshoot on myown, which is comical......
Anyway, I recently got a new laptop and vista. I set up my ntl.com email
account and all was going well until suddenly it started asking me for a
username and password, which is strange as until now it has not ( all was ok
for about a month prior to this). No one has added anything to the computer,
I do have AVG - but it has been on the machine since it was set up. I have
no idea what to do. I can access the emails form another pc, but oddly that
one has been strange today and asked me for a user name and password, yet
then let me in without them. This is what my laptop did at first, and then a
day or so later wouldnt let me access them at all. I also get thei error
message:

-- Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com (1)', Server: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR invalid user name or password.', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Does anyone have any ideas - any are appreciated. Thank you

Jo

Chances are, AVG antivirus was installed with its default install option.
If so, uninstall it, then reinstall, but select 'custom' install, which then
allows you to unselect installing its troublesome email scanning module.

While AVG is uninstalled, try Windows Mail again, just to verify that
the culprit has been found. If the challenge for username/password
continues, delete that account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate
the account.

Thanks Gary - I will give it a go - does it make sense that I can send
emails form the account???

Interference from an Antivirus can take different forms, and it is
not unusual that sending works while receiving fails, and vice versa.

Sadly this didnt work and I now have an additional problem that I dont seem
to be able to install AVG again - ( someone did it for me last time - so I am
learning all the time). Im now also worried about not having the virus
protection!

While AVG was uninstalled, did you do that last part of my recommendation:
"delete that account, restart Windows Mail, then recreate the account."?

You can always download a fresh copy of the free AVG antivirus:

If Windows Mail continues to misbehave for you, try upgrading to the newer
Windows Live Mail: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview
