This little joy is recurring more frequently than an untreated peptic ulcer
and its big brother the blue screen follows soon after.

Norton diagnostics tells me naff all except it can repair some temp
files....why keep them if their temps?

Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

I think maybe, r-click the Icon for the C: drive, Properties, Disk
Cleanup button, remove the clutter.

Occassionally, you need to purge/delete all the content from your
profile's Temp folder and the System temp as well. Best done just
after a boot of the PC.

System Temp @ C:\Windows\Temp
Profile @ Docs & Settings\'UserName'\Local Settings\Temp

Don't place too much (if any) confidence in any Norton diagnostic
program(s).

Don't know about a purge I'm thinking mass murder having had several more
unscripted walk on parts in blue movies (screens) so far today.

Reluctant to delete some odd looking files beacuse of their file extensions:

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_ISTMP0.DIR\CORECOMP.INI

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_ISTMP0.DIR\IsUninst.exe

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\_ISTMP0.DIR\Ctl3d32.dll

C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\Perflib_Perfdata_7ac.dat

Seem to remeber that it's a bad idea to delete *.exe, *.dll or *.ini
files....gives your PC the squits or something worse.

Any offers beyond buying in a stock of Imodium for the PC?

_ISTMP--- is simply a temporary folder to unpack installer code.
These files are distributed to their permanent destination folders &
no longer needed.

The more you install/use a PC, the more accumulated temporary
or workspace content is left on the PC. If you are reluctant to do
a cleanup, take the PC to a local shop and have it done for you.

Also, if you are concerned about damage/loss of functionality - then
the answer is an imaging program. Take a Image of your XP drive.
Then no matter what you do, you have the ability to undo changes.
I would recommend a ~$50 investment in Acronis True Image.
