Problem: Customer's version of Office XP Tools ( Word &
Excel) loads extremely slowly.

Configuration: Customer logs into 2000 Domain w/windows
XP Pro Workstation.

Word & Excel load extremely slowly, when not connected to
network, load at normal speed.

Other users not logging into domain do not have this issue.

Suspect a Security issue on domain server, but where ????

2 separate users having this issue.

Did discover that properties of the Word icon has a
security tab, & changing rights to include everyone made
Word load at proper speed, but documents, whether local or
on server, take in excess of 30sec to load, unless
disconnected from server. (loading local docs)

Also note. User changed from fractional T1, to Wireless
DSL connection, & problem co-insided with chang-over.

G'day "Wendy" <[email protected]>,

They are using global templates that are situated on the network.
Usually this is set from Tools > Options > File Locations > Workgroup
templates

Whilst these seems like a trivial solution to an age old problem, it
is fraught with the problems you describe. The better solution is an
auto-logon script that XCOPY's only updated files from the network
location to a local folder for use by Word.

Excel probably has the equivalent problem and also requires the same
solution.

Then there is also the trivial rename of Normal.dot, but is unlikely
this is the cause (unless this is ALSO loaded from a network
location).

Higher security settings would cause extra load on top of the existing
problems and thus make it noticable across what is normally a
high-speed, low collision network.
