I just built a new computer and a fresh WD hard drive.
Everytime I boot up the XP cd and go to this
installation, after formating the drive it gives me an
error when copying files. It says something about a file
not being an authentic WindowsXP image. If I retry it
continues but when setup finishes, it says something
about an NDIS or something like that, missing and reboots
the system. Also, when I do manage to set up WindowsXP,
all files I try to install from .exe files are corrupt
and occasionaly get a blue screen error saying 'A fatal
error has occured and has stopped WinXP. Reboot your
computer.' Please reply. Please help.

Is it an original Windows XP CD and not a copy?
Clean the CD and drive.
Open the case and reseat all components and cables especially memory.
If you have multiple sticks of memory are they identical?
Remove sticks ensuring you have at least the Windows XP minimum of
64mb.

Try it this way:
Clean Installation
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:

If you are installing using Windows XP Upgrade, insert qualifying
media in Step 4b.
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.

Thanks for your help, btw I am installing from a backup
copy of a Windows XP Pro cd. I keep the original with all
my original discs so they wont get damaged. Would the
copied CD be a problem? Also, I am using a really old
drive to install XP pro (about a 4-5 year old DVD drive),
would that be a problem? Let me know. Thanks.
