When I start installing XP, the error message tells me
that certain files can not be copied. Every time I try to
install, different files cannot copy.

Using a mild non-ammonia based household cleaner and a
soft cloth, clean your Windows XP CD of any fingerprints,
smudges, lipstick, etc.

Ronnie;
Sounds like a CD and/or drive problem.
Check and clean both using appropriate materials available at most
retailers that sell computer supplies.

I don't think it is a CD or drive problem. I ran into
the same problem. I have used two different CD drives
and two different XP disks. I have upgraded BIOS,
repartitioned/reformatted multiple times, and switched
back to my old video card with no results. I am really
curious as to what is going on here.

chelsea dave, i have the same problem. i dont appreciate
being told to 'clean disks' etc!!! my xp disk is legit and
without a scratch on it!!! i would like to get an accurate
answer from MS or anyone else on here or im gonna buy a
apple mac!!!

cheers

Whether you appreciate an accurate answer or not does not change the
facts.
Simply looking at the CD and not seeing a scratch is not enough,
microscopic scratches can cause problems also.
There was no suggestion that your CD was not legitimate, that is your
idea. Why is that?

Random files suggests a problem with the CD and/or drive, I have seen
this very issue many times.
Another possibility is hardware--bad memory, but almost never a
Windows issue.

Your post almost suggests you are looking for a specific answer and
anything else is unsatisfactory.
If that is the case, a Mac will not do for you either as a problem
cause will possibly not fit with your expectations.

Chelsea;
Possibly a hardware memory problem.
Reseat the memory and video card.
If you have multiple sticks of memory, remove sticks one at a time
making sure to stay above the Windows XP 64mb minimum.

It is hard to believe that a microscopic scratch will
cause files to not copy. If this is the case, CD
standards should have been readdressed during the
acqusition process many many years ago. My disk is brand
new also. There is absolutly no scratchs on this disk. I
don't have a microscope. But if I need one to check my
new disks, then we do, indeed, have quality and practical
issues. I see there are many people having the same
problem. I think MicroSoft needs to address this problem.
Though we've purchase OEM disks, the point is, we spent
money on this product and are receiving 0 satifaction;
infact, fustration and time waisted.

Ronnie;
Did you appropriately clean the CD ?
Did you appropriately clean the CD drive?
Did you replace the drive?
2 out of 3 of the above have absolutely nothing to do with Microsoft
but are among the causes of these types of issues.

And yes a microscopic scratch in the correct place can and does cause
these types of issues.
It does not matter whether you believe it or not, you have the problem
and you need to check the options.
Read the other posts this thread for other possibilities.

I have purchased a new CD drive, changed my IDE cables,
changed my power supply, removed all cards and extra
hardrives, reset my CMOS, and cleaned both sides of this
new Windows XP. All of this and to no avail. Every time
I install, a different set of files will not copy and some
will when I hit the retry button.

My WinXP Pro upgrade couldn't be read one day when I was trying to
install. I carefully cleaned the CD and when I tried again, all went
well. Also the CD drive could be faulty and cause problems.

replace your memory you have a bad stick

Try replacing a memory stick. sounds like you have a stick
of bad RAM. XP will not install unless your RAM has zero
bad sectors on it. I had the same problem and new meme
fixed it.
