lately I have been encountering "Program not responding"
messages at shutdown (WinXP Home). Can be NVidia, IE,
Outlook, but most often NVidia..which I think is my
display driver. Also, more frequent "this system has
recovered from a major error" (or something like that) at
start-up. M'Soft often replies that the error was caused
by an undetermined driver problem.

Suggestions as to how I can solve these troubling errors?

Thanks.

Make sure you have the most recent drivers for your Nvidia device. It
probably is your video card, although some motherboards have an NForce
chip. What changed between the time things worked and the time they
didn't? Additionally, see what Nvidia programs are running by using
Start>Run msconfig [enter] . You don't need the Nvidia control panel or
System Tray applet running, for instance, and perhaps they are causing
problems. Also, look in Event Viewer for clues (Start>Run eventvwr.msc
[enter]).

Go to www.grc.com and download Wizmo. Read how to set it up but basically
you can make it do many things, one of which is a forced Windows shutdown.
It doesn't care what else is going on that may be attempting to interrupt a
shutdown, it just rudely shuts it down if you use the "!" at the end of the
shutdown command.

Works well.
