Eric

I recently upgraded to XP from 98 and it worked well for
about a day. Then I turned my computer on and I got the
Windows 98 splash screen and the following error messages:

The following file is missing or corrupted:
C:\windows\himem.sys
C:\windows\dblbluff.sys
win.com
command.com
Type the name of the command interpreter
C>

If anyone knows how I can fix this I would greatly
appreciate it.

Hi Eric,

Sounds like the Win98 bootloader is back - no idea how though, you have any
ideas?

Anyhow, boot the WinXP CD, load the recovery console (see below) and from
the command prompt run fixboot.

HOW TO: Install and Use the Recovery Console in Windows XP [Q307654]

Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead
of Setup, take the immediate R for Repair. Assume any password
requested is blank, and TAB over.

Give the commands
Fixboot
FixMbr

This should restore the XP boot instead of the Win98 one that seems to
have returned (possibly through someone doing a SYS C:)
