I have a file that I have received from somebody, but it is not the
right file type.

What I mean for example is that I got a .tif file, but I know its
native format is that of a .tif, but I can't check for sure what to
do...is there a program, or a strategy on how to do this? Any
responses would be great. Thank you in advanced.

How do you know it's not a .tif file?

And why you believe it to NOT be a tif file. There ar MANY formats of tif.

Get Irfanview from the internet and then look at the file.

i understand there are many formats of tif....but thinking logically on
who it came from, im sure it was somebody who did not understand file
extensions, saw that our format we would like to receive them in is
tif, and saved it as a tif....i was thinking it was perhaps a .cgm
since it is a CAD print....is there a viewer program that can view
prints regardless of format....moreso like whether it was imaging data
stored in it?

Irfanview is one of the most universal, hence the suggestion. Of course
it won't open everything.

Have you tried to just open it by double-clicking on it? What happened?

Thinking logically isn't required in this case until you know that it
doesn't work normally and if not, what happens when you try.

If you think it's a cgm file, just change its extension to cgm and try to
open it.
