Problem with XP service pack 1

I installed sp1 from cd on my Toshiba Sat laptop. All went well until final reboot. Boot went fine until end where only the backgound showed up but no icons. I had to reboot in safe mode where it worked fine. Tried to reboot last known good but no luck. removed sp1 and computer works fine. tried again in install sp1, same problem
What to do???
