Problem With Word Eating Words

I have a question about something in Word that's been irritating me for some
time. Maybe I'm not phrasing the question properly, but I don't see an
answer to my problem. Here's what's happening. I'm typing merrily along,
then after awhile, suddenly, when I go back to make a correction, - say I had
only put one 'r' in correction - when I type in the 'r', then all the other
letters start to diasppear one by one. If I typed in the 'r', then the 'e'
would vanish, and if I then put in the 'e', then the 'c' would disappear
next. I have to shut everything down and reopen Word and everything works
for awhile, then starts again. Have re-installed Word 2000 several times,
but still get the problem. I know, probably something simple, but can
someone tell me why this happens? Thanx!

This is simply Word operating in overwrite mode as opposed to insert mode.
Either press the INS key (which works as a toggle) or double click the OVR
symbol on the status bar.
