Hi,

I use word 2007 and have recently installed Vista. Since doing this people
can't open my word attachments. Any idea what the problem may be?

Thanks for any help you can give,
Katherine

<sigh> - the default file type for Word 2007 is docx - which is not natively
readable by prior versions.
You have three alternatives. You can either do Save-As and choose 97-2003
version if you need to send a file to someone else, or, you can set Word
2007 to automatically save files in the 97=2003 format (but then there's not
a lot of point in having Word 2007) or, best of all, because it gives them
all the new fonts used in Word 2007, get your recipients to install the
Office 2007 Compatibility Pack.
They can get it here:

Gordon,
Thank you for the information. I could do without the annoyed <sigh> that
doesn't really help my situation any. Have a wonderful day :).

The <sigh> was because as Office 2007 has been out for just over a year, if
you'd done some research first, you would have answered your own question
before you posted....
Google is YOUR friend....

Foolish me for thinking this was a helpful discussion group...This is also a
rather new thing for me, sometimes finding the answer is as painful as the
problem. Fortunately, I have a good sense of humor!
Can you be bothered to let me know if WLM would be a better option in my
situation than WM?

Gordon,

I've seen you do this a lot (add the <sign>) and I would have thought that
if someone brought it to your attention like Katherine did, you might have
changed your behavior, but guess not. If you are annoyed at answering these
questions, then why bother. There are lots of us around who would gladly
answer them without the insult. Your total helpfulness to the groups is a
net negative.

Well I'm sorry. This particular thing is WELL DOCUMENTED - for at least a
year. Do you wipe peoples' bottoms for them?

That is completely uncalled for...I looked through lots of threads in this
site to find an answer without any luck. This may be an old issue for you
but for me it has been a month with this system. I am not an idiot. I just
haven't been doing this as long as you. Can you take apart an entire car
engine and put it back together?
I think you may need to learn meditation! Relax!
Katherine

You don't have to be sorry. I have enough house contractors telling me "I'm
sorry". I think they were probably good at "sorry school" and missed the
"execution school". I rather people execute then be sorry.

Secondly, you missed the point. Put yourself in the other person's
position. She (and there are many like her,I'll just say 'she" for now) is
just trying to get a particular job done and could care less if this
situation came up before. She went to the best place to go, here, and asked
a simple question. All anyone needs to say is: "That's a common situation
and here's how to find the answer....or here's the answer". If it's so
common, then make yourself a Word document with common responses and copy
and paste the answer, without the <sigh> please.

Thirdly, your last comment here is an example of your attitude. You have to
ask yourself "What am I doing here?". If you want to help, please do so and
at the same time make people feel good to have come here". If you want have
fun making people fell bad, you are on the right track and maybe you can
even do a better job. It's hard to tell sometimes.

Well Documented? Where (from Katherine's point of view), Did you read
"Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy"?

Nastiness aside, can anyone tell me if WLM would be a solution to my problem?
And thank you Bob for being a gentleman.
Katherine

Please don't worry about it Katherine. Gordon has been displaying this
attitude since he arrived. Most people have been ignoring him. He
certainly doesn't represent most of the people here that want to help. If
he hadn't answered your question, on of the others would have pick it up and
I'm sure you would have had a much better experience.

Windows Mail came with Vista, but it hasn't been updated in over a year.
WLM came out after Vista, and has been updated a few times. It seems to
work better in several ways..

Probably WLM won't solve this problem but If I were you, I'd move over to
WLM in any regard. I Think you'd like it better and is considered a
replacement for WM. It's really painless to update and almost everything
come up automatically. Take a look here.

Now as far as Your Word 2007 and as Gordon was trying to say, This is a
common question and can be found easily by using Google. But a synopsis is:
1. 2007, to be read in a previous version needs to be saved (by you) in the
down-revision format for them to read. You might notice the 2007 extension
is .docx and what the other end is looking for is .doc. 2. Make sure the
people at the other end allow attachments to pass. 3. We are assuming here,
nothing else has changed. If these thing don't work and you still have
problems, please come back and ask again (or Google more, that's really
what we do a lot)

Bob,

You are a sweetie. Thank you so much for the information and explanation.
I'm sorry that my "simple" question caused so much disruption. Thank you for
not treating me like a moron. If I continue to have issues, I will probably
try WLM so the info link is much appreciated.

Warmly,
Katherine

Katherine,
You are very welcome. Hope it all works out for you. And by the way, I'd
encourage you to jump to WLM now. I think you will find it very painless.

um..Bob,
I have another question can I ask it or should I start a new thread?

In defense of Gordon, the best initial place to go is always Google. That's where I
go when I need to research something. When a Google search is unproductive,
*then* it is time to call on the experts.

Do I waste a doctor's time when I have a hangnail? No, that would not be
efficient use of a professional's time.

No.
You have to save the document in Word 97-2003 format, not in the new DOCX
format. You do this in Word.

I had no idea that people that assist with computers were such snobs. I have
read the same "can't send email" thread 50 times in the last 2 days why is
that not a problem. I won't trouble you guys any more if there is going to
be so much whining.
Katherine

If it's another question on Windows Mail, that would be a good idea.

If it's a question on Windows Live Mail, a new thread in the following
newsgroup would be a better idea:

microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop
