I've recently been getting an error message/program termination every time I
try to use Word 2000 SR-1 (OS Windows XP). It ran for I don't know how many
mothys without any problems, but now...
Every time I try to work in Word, when I try to save or use anything in the
task bar, I get the error message "Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered
a problem and needs to close".

I've uninstalled and reinstalled Word (repeatedly). I also tried the
suggestions on this website:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326510
The compatibility suggestion did not work, and when I searched for
Normal.dot (per the second suggestion), there were no hits from the search.
If anyone has suggestions of what I could try next, I would really really
appreciate it...I was in the middle of a major project for school, and now
I'm stuck!!

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm .
You can find the folder where your Normal.dot template should be
by starting Word, clicking on Tools | Options | File Locations,
and noting the folder designated for "User Templates". Your
search didn't find the file probably because you forgot to enable
display of hidden files in My Computer or Windows Explorer by
clicking on Tools | Folder Options | View | check the radio
button for "Show hidden files and folders" | OK.

Thank you!!!
