Problem with windows XP pro installation

Hello...

I've done a fresh winxp pro install on a freshly formatted and partitioned
drive. The install went completely smoothly, and I got to the screens where
it walks you through 'setting up your computer'.....
At the user name screen, I entered my user name and clicked next.
The computer then continued loading windows and went to the XP logon screen,
with my user name listed. It is asking for a password in order to logon!
I've never set a password, and pushing enter I get the message "the specified
domain either does not exist or could not be contacted". Do I need to wipe
the drive and reinstall, or is there a way past this?
Thanks!

ps, it is an early version of XP, going on a P3 450 with 256mg ram. I know
its a stretch, but this will be a barebones machine

It sounds like you chose to "Join a Domain" during the setup. You can leave
the password blank.

Hi Colin..

That's the thing, I get the error message when I leave the password blank.

Is there any way to reset the password if I can't log in to windows?

When does the "join a domain" question come up? Directly before the product
key screen? I had left for a while, and my father may have pushed a button
or two, stopping at the product screen.

Also, another thing I noticed. There is no "shut down" button in the bottom
left corner of the windows log-in screen. Does this mean there is a glitch
somewhere in the install?

Thanks...
Andrew

Conditions
1. During setup, did you add "Windows XP Professional" to a domain? If so,
then you will need to logon to "Windows XP Professional" using a domain "User
ID and Password". You can also logon to "Windows XP Professional" locally by
selecting the computer name (Name given during setup): This will require you
to use a local account. Since you did not provide a password, leave it blank
and click on "OK" for the initial account created. For exapmle, if your name
appear as "John Smith", then the username is "John Smith" with blank
password. Also, if you did not provide any password during setup, then you
can use "Administrator" with no password and just click on "OK". Reminder:
During any type of setup, it is absolutely critical to provide a password if
a workstation will be added to a domain. I would recommend this procedure
even though it will not be on a domain.
2. If you never added "Windows XP Professinal to a domain, then something is
very wrong. As you have mentioned, you enter your name and the install
continue. The first screean that appear during setup will ask you for you
"Name" and "Organization", if this is what you meant, then OK for now. If
the only information you enter is "Name", then I am also assuming that you
did an unattened install with "Computer Name", "Organization Name", and
"Domain" preconfigured. This means that the workstation is added to a domain
during setup. If the workstation has not been moved from one location to
antoher either way, check the LAN cable and make sure it is plugged in. Or
if you have selected all setup defaults, then the workstation never joined a
domain, and this error should have never appeared/occured. I hope this help.

During the network setup phase of the installation.

Hello again...

Thanks for the tips. Something definitely went a-miss during the install.
I tried repairing the install, and the same problem happened again.

So I started fresh again, and everything went smoothly. I did not get the
majority of the setup screens the first few times..... namely the computer
name, domain setup, etc.

Computer is working beautifully now. Thanks everyone for their help.
