I upgraded my Norton System Works Professional 2004 to System Works 2005
Regular. They didn't mention that my Norton Password Manager would be
dismantled in the process.
Their solution was to re-install the Password Manager from their site. In
doing so, I received an error message "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error! . . . Abnormal program termination".
Symantec then informs me I received this message because my MS Windows
Installer has become corrupted.
Their advise was to download the clean-up utility, delete certain programs,
and then re-install the MS Windows Installer and well as the Symantec
programs that the clean-up utility got rid of.
However, when going to the MS site I am informed that the MS Windows
Installer for XP Service Pack 2 is contained within the Service Pack and
that I should contact MS. There was no downloadable solution.
To this point, I have downloaded the clean-up utility but have not used it.
And I evidently have a corrupted Windows Installer within my Service Pack 2,
according to Symantec.
My OS is registered (I purchased through Dell). It appears from what I read
on the MS site that if the system agrees my OS is registered, then the
solution that appears to be offered is to re-install XP.
Good grief! How can I troubleshoot the Windows Installer to make sure
Symantec is right that it is corrupted; and if it is, am I reading the MS
site right that I have to re-install XP?
Thanks,
Fred
