Hello,

I have a laser jet 6L on a XP and use it in my network. I have shared
it. one of my clients has windows 98 and can not see this printer.
this computer has both win98 and XP. When I run the system with XP it
works fine and shared printer can be seen and use. but with 98 I can
not see the shared printer.

What can be the issue?

thanks in advance for your help.

Does the Win98 box see/share with the rest of the network successfully?

Did you install the printer software on the Win98 box? How did you add
the printer to Win98?

I wonder whether the same HP software has been installed on both! That
might cause a problem!

If you mean that the HP software *isn't* installed on the Win98 box,
that could certainly cause a problem. That's why I asked Roseta to
describe what she actually did. A lot depends on how the 6L is
connected to her network. If it is connected via ethernet, using the HP
Network Printer Wizard (or whatever it's called - if it is and she
comes back, I'll look it up) works really well. If it is connected
locally to some other computer, then probably the OP would need to
install the software separately on the Win98 box.

Unless Roseta comes back with a better, more descriptive post - I guess
we'll never know!

Cheers,

I am not sure about sharing and how that fits in the equation. However,
for one of my HP printers there was separate software for Windows 98
and Windows XP. It was not just drivers.

Some older HP's require you to install the software - usually just the
drivers but sometimes you don't have a choice to do a custom install -
on the individual computers. When you share printers between XP
machines, the box where you are adding the printer can get the drivers
from the box where the printer is locally connected. That can't happen
in a Win98-to-XP situation.

But since the OP hasn't come back, it doesn't matter anymore.

Hello
thank you all .
If I share directories on the XP which has the printer I can see it on
98. so there is no problem on network.
I added win98 driver on the XP having printer in additional driver
section. and I also used the exe file of 98 driver on my 98 computer.
but no use.
I do not know if installing driver on both computers can make this
problem or not but I have done that too.
I have done both installed the 98 driver on 98 computer and on XP
computer.
I have a lan with bus topology and one computer on lan has the printer
and has XP os. the other computer on network has 98 and XP OS.
I guess that is all you asked. I did not undrestand from your words,
either I have to install drivers individually or just on the computer
that has the printer on it.

Thanks in advnace.

Hello,

I have a lan with bus topology. one of my computers has a laser jet
printer with XP. there is another client with 98 and xp OS. If I share
a directory on a Printer computer , I can see it on 98 computer. but
shared printer can not bee seen. even in add printer wizard the
computer is shown but there is no printer in it to be added. I have
installed 98 driver of printer on XP having printer and on 98 computer
also. I do not know what is correct and on which it should be
installed. I have added the on additional driver of XP having printer
the 98 printer. but still not working .
but it does not see the printer to say to add it and get the dirver
from the computer where the printer is locally connected.
if more information is needed tell me.
more help is appriciated

Hi!
use a short name (no more than 8 characters) in the shared as (name of the
printer you will share)

Best regards!

Hello

I am using a network with bus topology. one client has a laser jet
connected to it and I want the other client which has XP and 98 OS to
print via that printer.
Sharing has no problem in network and if I share a directory I can use
it from 98 computer. I have installed the driver on both computers but
no use.
I thought that 98 should get the driver from the computer that has the
printer locally connected to it so I put it on the additional driver on
XP on the computer that has the printer but no use?

other information needed?

If I want to delete the printer and install it again in a way that it
asks and need for driver what do I have to do?
If I remove the printer to install it again, it does not need driver
and it will find the driver and additional driver itself.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

The problem is solved. It needed a share name shorter than 8 character.

Thank you very much for your helps.

Actually up to 12 chars is acceptable.
