Every now and then when I restart the computer, the taskbar at the
bottom of the screen is "messed up". I noticed this on both my desktop
and notebook machines. There would be "extra" sparators or spaces out
of nowhere that I can't get rid off, affecting the rest of the taskbar
areas that I really want to use. Sometimes rebooting the machine
mproves the situation, but not all the time. Dragging/moving the
various parts of the taskbar often makes it worse. Does anybody know
exactly how I can correct the situation?

My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Grab Kelly's tool and reset it:

Taskbar Repair Tool Plus!:

It's do-able with the free version if I recall but the issues with the
taskbar and notification area tend to crop up often enough to warrant buying
said application at the price.
