Problem with Sound Hardware Error Message

I am setting up a new pc and have loaded a number of audio/video players and
utilities. I have Rhapsody, Winamp, WMP 10 and a streaming caputure program
called Total Recorder with some added codecs. All play perfectly and Total
Recorder records as it should.

So I try to open the Sound icon in the System Tray and I get--"There is a
problem with sound hardware. To install mixer devices go Control Panel,
click Printers and Other Hardware, and the click Add Hardware"--

Weird--I have added no "hardware", only software. The pc is running XP SP2
with all updates and has Realtek High Definition Audio card(preinstalled)

Anybody got a clue on this one???

Funny. I was about to ask the same question. I too have lost access to MS
Sound Recorder. I can't reinstall it from my XP disc because the SP2 I have
on board is newer then the SP1 that's on the XP-CD.
Upon seeing your message, I'm now wondering if Total Recorder is to blame. I
recently installed it on my PC and that's about when I lost my Volume
Control in the System Tray. I have asked around on and offline and have been
told to re-install Sound Recorder. Which takes me back to square one. I
can't because SP1/Sp2, etc.

Hopefully, some nice person will be able to help both of us defeat this
glitch. The sooner the better. Maybe one of those MSMVP's we hear so much
about.

I also notice you've been waiting for a reply to your message for awhile.
Have you managed to fix your troubles since? If so, I'd sure like to know
how.

Thanks in advance,

Terry

I had all kinds of problems setting this machine up and finally had to do a
complete new install of Windows. The problem was gone after that. I don't
know what happened the first time.

Sorry.

How did you manage to re-install? I'm always getting messages that say I
can't re-install because my machine contains a newer version of Windows than
my disc. That's because I have updated with SP2 and the disc only has SP1 on
it.

Hope you can help here.

Thanks,
Terry

Sorry, beyond my capability. Go to the General Windows Newsgroup and ask the
question. I,m sure an MVP will know how to do that.
