I tried to install an old program on a xp machine. The install failed
becaused the program is dos based. but now search hangs the cpu.. think it
may have corrupted the directory somehow.. ran scan disk and told it to
repair but still get the hang. can't go back to a recovery point since there
have been other changes since.

Any ideas?

Hi Larry,
Is there is an error message or just hung?.
Open a run command and type in:
%SystemRoot%\Inf click [OK]
There locate this File Srchasst.inf file, right-click on this file and then
select
Install.
Does this Help, if not please look in the Event Viewer for error messages(X)
double click it and you can copy and paste in your post.

got a problem. install calls for windows cd and the sp2 upgrade cd doesn't
have the program. Have an compaq and can't find where they put the
distribution files.

Hi Larry,
Then you need to slipstream the SP2 into your CD and then try the
installation of the Search.
