Problem With Reply

I am using outlook 2003 on a WinXP Pro/SP2 system with all current updates.
Suddenly, when I click on "Reply" the hourglass icon appears and just stays
there. Once in a while I see a popup stating that Outlook is starting Word
as my editor but that also never completes (I can launch Word independently
without a problem). The only recent updates are the auto updates from MS.

Any thoughts on how to correct this?
 
I just found out that trying to compose a new message also hangs up Outlook.
It looks like the failure is in the process Outlook uses to call Word?
