Hi,

After attempting to install HP CD-Writer Plus software for a HP 8100
cdwriter on a compaq deskpro running windows XP,
some kind of error occurred. Now windows complains about the problem
everytime the system restarts. Somehow I can't
remove the software in the configuration pannel
(Settings>Configuration>Software).

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I didn't install the software myself but subsequently found software
for the CD writer which is supposed to be compatible
with windows XP ('HP RecordNow'). In Start>Programs, I can still see
an entry for 'HP CD-Writer Plus', the faulty software
that is probably causing problems. In Settings>Configuration>Software,
I can only find a reference to 'HP RecordNow'.
I have a (partial) screenshot of the exact error reported when Windows
is starting up (in dutch with my translation):

Someone has previously mentioned a potential solution to the problem,
but I can't figure out how to solve it myself:
Go to Start>Run Type: msconfig select Startup Tab uncheck any
item that refers to the software.

Here is a screenshot of the Startup Tab. Does anyone have any idea
which entries could be related to the faulty software?

If that doesnt work then go to Start>Run Type: regedit
Select HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Run, Run Once etc. Click on the Folders and in the
right pane look for any reference to your software and delete
it. Also, the same for
Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run, Run
Once etc.

This is a screenshot of the regedit screen. (Run Once is empty, just
like the Run and Run Once entries for
HKey_Current_User.) Perhaps someone can identify the entry of the
faulty software here?

Maybe someone can help me out taking a look at these screenshots or
suggest an alternative solution to the problem.
Thanks a lot for any help!

regards, Niek

I had this drive when I first upgraded to XP. That particular model was
made by a few different companies so one HP8100 drive was not exactly the
same as the next. The one that I had did not do well with XP's builtin CD
burning or with the newer software HP had at their site to replace the
original Roxio package the drive shipped with. It's worth a try though as
some folks did get that replacement software to work. I ended up going with
Ahead's Nero package (including InCD) and the drive worked fine with that
software until it was ultimately replaced with another burner.

If the software installed before RecordNow was the Roxio package see the
troubleshooting section of this article:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm

The subsection titled ´My CD drives have vanished (from Explorer, Device
Manager, etc.)¡ addresses the leftovers from older Roxio packages and there
is a link to a file (cdgone.zip) that gets rid of the stray registry
entries for the Roxio CD drivers.

I don't read Dutch but I believe this MS Knowledge Base article addresses
the balloon popup message that you see at startup:

I'm also using Ahead's Nero and the CD writer operates fine but I
still get the error message everytime I start up.
I think it's version 3.01 of Easy CD Creator that causes the problem.

This page seems pretty close to the solution I'm looking for, but is
not quite right as far as I can tell. Some of the registry entries it
says to remove are not found in my registry and after changing the
registry as specified, the error message remains.
I can't find any articles at the Microsoft Help and Support site that
specifically refer to Easy CD Creator 3.01 and on the Roxio site,
there are no references to Easy CD Creator 3.x (only to 4.x and 5.x).
Is there any way to figure out from the installation CD what changes
have been made to the registry to revert them manually somehow?

That version of EZCD isn't approved for use with XP at all. Version 4 of
EZCD, you could sneak by with IF you installed the Roxio updates. If the
upgrade advisor is run before XP is installed it will take note of that
earlier version and list it as not compatible.

When following the KB article directions
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=315345) I think I only had one of the
registry entries. I did find both Cdr4_2K.sys and Cdralw2k.sys files
mentioned in the article. Removed them any mention of them in the registry
that looked like a pointer for the files. (If they are in a Blocked driver
list, leave them there.) This was all 2 years ago but if I recall
correctly, it wasn't until the files were deleted from the hard drive that
I finally felt like I was making some headway on the problem.

That's about as much as I can remember about my struggle with this. Roxio
*should* have some documentation at their website about what needs to be
deleted to remove the program entirely. An email to their tech support may
provide a link or more info.

Another method I've used when weeding out sticky leftover files is to do a
search by date:

-- Match the date created of the original Roxio folder to other files.
-- Often a program will use the same date for many of the files it adds to
the hard drive.

Search by text and looking for "Roxio" and/or "Adaptec" is time consuming
but can also turn up a few strays. Suggest using Agent Ransack for this
part though since XP's Search is not very good at finding text in certain
files.

After inquiring about this problem in comp.publish.cdrom.hardware, I
got
a response which mentioned the following article:

http://www.plextor.com/english/support/faqs/SW00017.htm

After executing all steps mentioned in the article, the start-up error
message remained however.

With some guesswork (since the aforementioned article refers to a file
named "cdr4vsd.sys") I decided to remove the 'cdr4vsd' registry key
from
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\
and this seems to help since I no longer get the error message when I
start up Windows.
However, I don't feel very confident about my ability to remove the
proper registry entries based on guesswork so I'll just hope for the
best that this lucky guess has finally solved the problem with the
removal of Easy CD Writer software under Windows XP.

Thanks for your help, kind regards, Niek
