Problem with Raptor HDD under Windows XP Pro

Hi,

I have got a strange problem when installing a second Raptor SATA HDD
on my PC.
My config :
- P4C800 DeLuxe, 1Go RAM, PIV 3 GHz, HDD Raptor SATA 36 Go

I installed a Raptor SATA HDD 74 Go on the second SATA port. I
partitioned it, formatted it and tested it (copying data). Everything
worked fine. However, a couple of hours later, it disappeared (I could
not see it anywhere under WXP), and I got these messages in the event
observer :

I stopped the machine, disconnected the HDD, reboot, then stopped
again, reconnected the HDD and I could see it again (no data
corruption)... But the problem occured again a few hours later... and
again and again !

I wonder what it can come from : the disk seems to be all rignt (I
checked it under WXP and with WD Tool (DataLifeGuardNT.exe). Can it be
a cable problem, a controller problem, an alimentation problem (I have
an Enermax 300 W) ?

I really don't know what to do as I already changed the disk because
of the same problem... so it seems to be related ton my config than to
the disk.

Has anyone encounter that kind of issue ? Any idea ?

Thanks for your help.

I have a couple of thoughts. First, install the latest chipset drivers
for your computer from here:
http://www.guru3d.com/newsitem.php?id=1671

Double check your BIOS settings, switch the SATA cables (I know you had
some come with the motherboard and with the drives, so just try a new
one), check the S.M.A.R.T on the drive using WD Tools or Everest Home
from www.lavalys.com . As a last ditch effort, try backing up ALL of
your data, clean both drives (format NTFS Quick), and install Windows
again. If the problem still occurs, it may be either the drive or your
SATA Controller/port is going bad.

Thank you Nathan for your answer,

I changed the SATA cable, and it seems to work... I mean it has been
working all right for a couple of hours. I downloaded Everest, and my
drives are both all right according to it. I am going to test the HDD
a bit further and I'll let you know the result.

Thanks

Glad to hear. I had something similar happening on my drive but it was
because the connector on the SATA cable was slightly cracked and not
making a snug connection. After trying everything software-wise I could
think of, I switched out the cable on a whim and I found that crack and
it worked afterwards :)

Good luck and I hope that fixed it.

No problem since the cable change. Thanks again for your help
