Tried to install the Windows XP HighMat support in CD
writing Wizard (KB831240) and it downloaded but won't
install. Now my computer gets the "blue screen of death"
and I have to restart. How can I fix this? Is Microsoft
not to be trusted now? I went thru their website.

Hi Susan,
Does your CD burner support HighMAT? If not, perhaps
that is the cause of your blue screen.
"The CDs are optimized for easy viewing and sharing on CD
and DVD players that use the HighMAT logo."

Here's some reading material for you.

Is the 831240 update listed in Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs so that it could be removed? You stated that it
wouldn't install, I know, but suggest you have a look, if
you haven't looked already.

Have you tried going back to a Restore Point?
