John

I am having a problem with all Hotmail accounts on my system. Both Outlook
2002 and OE 6.

Problem:
Keeps asking for Username and Password.

UserID and Password have been verified (via direct Internet Explorer
Hotmail.MSN.Com login)

I wish I could find what could possibly be wrong. These settings used to
work fine. No new changes (only blocked cookies from trash sites to limit
junk.

hotmail.com is a trused site.
msn.com is a trused site.

I believe it is a security issue with some script from Hotmail, but can not
find the setting.

Too much spam in e-mails to reset security at this point.
I primarily need to know the sites I need to give access to allow the
hot-mail accounts to be checked.

Thanks.

John.

PA Bear,
As stated in previous Post.

The error is "> > Keeps asking for Username and Password."

The box that requests the userid and password keeps appearing.

Logon - Hotmail

- Please enter your user name and password for the following server

- UserName; (Correct UserID [same one used to login to web site])

- Password: (********) Have retyped password 150 times, all the
same as used to login to website.

If I select Cancel, It is gives the following error:
Authorization Required

Configuration:
Account: Hotmail
Server: http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp
User name: (e-mail address removed)
Protocol: HTTPMail
Port: 0
Secure(SSL): 0

The reason is latest security patch from Microsoft. See:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;834489.

You have to create new registry key, which disables the new security feature
causing
these problems.

Smile Extender,
Thanks for the info, Applied the fix. Did not change behavior. Rebooted,
still having same behavior. Something is still blocking access to HotMail.

John.

PS. Still too nervous about dropping all protection to get application to
work. If there are certain cookies to allow, I would look into it. (As
company network Admin, not willing to drop all safeguards.)

Ah, now we know the rest of the story.

Is this a sudden/new problem or an ongoing one? Has the account ever worked
in OE? Error Code 800ccc32 indicates either it's really an MSN account
([email protected]) and OE is configured for a Hotmail account ([email protected])
or you have some incorrect settings.

If it's an MSN account, see http://supportservices.msn.com/us/oeconfig/
(valid MSN ID required). Note: Although you can access an MSN account at
the online Hotmail page, MSN and Hotmail accounts aren't configured the same
way in OE as they poll different HTTP servers for mail. Why? I have no
idea.

If it is a Hotmail account:

Make certain your time, date, *and time* zone settings are correct and that
the account is configured as per
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;220852.

Temporarily disable your firewall, any "system" tools (NSW, NIS, anything by
Norton or McAfee) and pop-up/ad blockers to see if one or more of these
applications is interfering.

IE Tools>Internet Options>Advanced>HTTP 1.1>toggle between the two options.
[BTDT]

IE Tools>Internet Options>Security>[zone in which you're running OE (should
be Restricted Sites)]>Custom Level>User Authentication>Logon>toggle between
Anonymous Logon [works for Hotmail in Retricted Sites here], Automatic Logon
with Current Username and Password, and Automatic Logon only in Intranet
zone. [BTDT2]

Resetting either or both of the above Tabs to Default might help.

How do you connect? Is the machine on a network...with or without a router?

Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity
(File>Identities>Add new identity). Assuming all is well, import messages
from the old Identity before deleting it (File>Identities>Manage
Identities).

Or it's a problem on Hotmail's end.

I had the same problem. Specifically, Outlook Express would be just fine in
checking my mail, but when I tried to check my mail via Internet Explorer,
the Hotmail/Passport screen would ask for my password. Typing in the
password would just result in being asked again. My solution was to go into
McAfee's Privacy Service, "Control Access to Cookies," and then change
msn.com rejected to msn.com accepted. For future reference, Hotmail places
the following cookies on your computer when you are checking your mail:
hotmail.msn.com, passport.com, atdmt.com, and msn.com. I accepted the
latter 3. The hotmail.msn.com was not listed in McAfee as being sent, only
hotmail.com. Accepting the latter 3 made Hotmail via IE work.

I was able to get into hotmail from messenger and hotmail.com with just
allowing the msn.com cookie.
