Problem with hearing sounds

For some reason my speakers will play music when i have a video running through windows media player, or any other video player. But, when i try to play things through websites or AOL instant messanger(the standard instant messaging noises) it does not work. Ive checked almost everything i could think of (the volume control through the volume adjustment (in control panel-->sounds and audio devices---> advanced) and through my keyboard) and everything seemed fine. If anyone knows what could be the problem i would appreciate it.

Have you checked your internet options, advanced, multimedia settings?
Just a thought as you've already checked everything else
