my laptop recently had an error where a windows system file randomly
went missing / got corrupted. i've tried using the system restore with
back up, but it freezes every time. i really don't want to lose my
files. i do some research, go to best buy, and buy a laptop to IDE
converter adapter kit and hook it up. all goes well. however, all of my
files are in my My Documents folder, and i can't move or access them
because it is not being accessed from my laptop. the only way to get
windows to boot on my laptop would to be a full system restore,
deleting the files and the entire purpose of everything. is there any
possible way to get my files out of my documents?

System Restore does not delete files. It only restores System Settings to a
time before you started having problems. Try it in Safe Mode.

With the laptop hard drive installed as a slave on your working
computer you need to take ownership of the files. Take a look
here for the procedure:

Note: If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you
must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an
account that has Administrative rights to have access to the
Security tab. To start in Safe Mode, reboot your computer and
start tapping the F8 key as soon as you see anything displayed
on the screen. Keep hitting F8 until the Advanced Startup
Options menu appears. Use the up and down arrow keys on your
keyboard to select Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

Good luck
