I have had problems the last couple days and posted about it how I lost a
lot of my files on winxp professional. I have not figured out why but have
managed to clean up most of the mess and reinstall most of my programs.

I know have a problem with a folder popping open on reboots or startup I
cant figure out why.

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Tools

opens up every time I reboot. Can someone help me figure out how to stop
this? I know there has to be a reg fix or something and I cant seem to find
it in the startup menu so am trying to figure out how to stop this from
opening when I startup.

Thanks.

might be a virus, run your antivirus program.

I have suspected a virus since this mess started but I have run four
scanners on it and nothing. I have run adaware I have run spybot nothing. So
I am still trying to clean up a mess. I unistalled Firefox the day before
and on reboot it deleted almost all my programs on F drive and on C drive
and messed up what was left. I have managed to clean up most of it but still
finding a few glitches. Wish I knew why I was having these problems but yet
have not figured it out.

Look at Greg's post, it's a good one. Also, make sure your antivirus and
spyware removal utilities are both up to date.

Another thought: It sure sounds like a virus to me. Go to
www.authentium.com or www.trendmicro.com and use their online scanners.
Firefox will not cause those problems, because I use Firefox all the time
and have uninstalled it with no problems.

The common places that a program or folder will start from are:

Start > Programs > Startup

Open Regedit and go the the following keys:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

You can also use 3rd party tools such as hijack this to find and remove such
entries. http://www.tomcoyote.com/hjt

Oh this post duh Sorry. I did this and still didnt find it so went through
and did a search in regedit for startup and low and behold it was there but
not showing in the startup menu so go figure. Anyways deleted this key and
the problem has stopped.

Thanks for the help.

Boy will be glad when this mess is cleaned up and I can work without
problems again lol

Well I ran housecall yesterday and Nortons Online Scanner and Pandas as well
as AVG and MaAfee Online scanner and they all came up clean as well as
running Spybot and Adaware not a thing.

I have never had a problem with Firefox either till I installed the newest
version and it was running extremely slow and I couldnt get any links to
work when I would click on them and I couldnt get downloads to work so
figured I would uninstall and install it again but after the unistall I had
the fiasco I am now trying to clean up...

Forgot to mention did the scan just now at www.authentium.com and nada.. So
I am as perplexed as anyone else here as it seemed to me to be a virus and
with the other quirks that keep popping up I wondered.

Is it possible I have a corrupt registry? But then it wouldnt explain all
the programs going poof on me either.

I have a similiar problem after a Spybot attack. A Microsoft message pops up
warning me of "winad client". This is in my Startup Folder. How do I get rid
of it? Do I neet to remove something from the Registry. I'm reluctant to
fiddle in case I make things worse.
