Problem With Error-Checking

When I try to run Scandisk/Error-Checking on my hardrive, I get a message saying "Cannot open volume for direct access" after Windows XP restarts. After that, it says that Windows has finished checking the disk (even though it hasn't) and it loads up the screen where you select the user. Because it really isn't running the check, it also now tries to do this everytime I log in and I cannot turn it off. I did a "System Restore" to several points dating back past the last time I know the Error-checker worked properly, but that didn't help. Can anyone tell me why the checker cannot open the volume and/or how to "unschedule" the error-checking until I can figure out what is wrong? Thanks alot!

To cancel a scheduled run of chkdsk:
1.Go to Start>Run and then type in: “cmd†no quotes
2. Press Enter
2. Type in: "chkntfs /x c:" no quotes

Cannot open volume for direct access.
The type of the file system is NTFS.
IFSUTIL: Can't open drive. Status returned = c0000043.
Windows has finished checking the disk.
