Problem with DNS after fixing XP problem

I was using XP Home Ed SP2 when one day my PC wouldn't boot. Whether it was
one of the components installed with automatic update, or whether one of the
kids did something I don't know.

Anyway, to miss out several fault finding steps, I ended up using my XP
CD-ROM and using the 'repair' option. This then 'repaired' the OS but it now
seems to be at SP1.

I can't get my internet connection to work correctly. The dialup connection
will connect, but I can't get any URLs to be recognised by the DNS. I am on
demon and have entered the DNS addresses 158.152.1.53 and 158.152.1.43 which
I can ping successfully, so I can see the DNS. I can successfully ping
194.159.246.194 which is the IP address of www.demon.net but if I put the URL
in it returns 'host not found'.

Any ideas why my PC is not accessing the DNS servers which it can obviously
see?

All Together Now:
"What is one of the worst FIRST troubleshooting options?"
"Ye Olde Repair Install"
Why?
Because all too likely, the Operating System has already been upgraded to a
newer
version than what is on the original CD, such as in this case where SP2 had
been installed
and the CD only had SP1. Can you say "mismatched files"? Can you say
"damaged registry"?
Can you say "All System Restore Points have been erased"?

Re-install SP2. One way to do that is to download it to another
computer, burn it to a CD, and run it on your computer. It's
