Problem with connecting to a server

I have set up an intranet in a small office using IIS
5.0. There are 4 PC's on the network. All the PC's but 1
(a Dell Inspiron 8000 notebook) can open the intranet
site. When I attempt to open the intranet site on the
Dell, (using IE) the usual IE error screen comes up saying
that it cannot find http://IntranetServer/WebSite. FP
will not publish anything to the site reporting basically
the same message. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

You might try creating a host file. Do a search for host.sam, modify and
save as host (not extension) in the same location as the host.sam file.

Thomas,

Thanks for the reply. I did a search for the host.sam
file and did not find. Can you elaborate a little more?

Thanks,

Bill

Ok, look for a folder c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc

The file name is: hosts.sam

If not you can create the file in this folder with notepad and you would add
a entry for each computer on your network as:

ipaddress name

then save the file without any extensions, you may need to rename it to
remove the extensions. This file should then be copies to all computers,
then each needs to be re-booted.

Tom,

It worked. Thanks so much. I would have worked the trial-
and-error program for 20 years and never have found that.

Could you recommend a resource for this sort of problem
relating to networking/ IIS/ etc.?

Thanks again.

Bill

Bill, glad to hear you got it solved.

This was something that I learned back in 1997 when setting up my local
network and working against a web server and today I still use the hosts
file with Windows XP (Home/Pro) and Windows 2000 Server.
