Problem with computer shutting down for no apparent reason

I purchased a Sony VAIO laptop back in December and for the last 3 weeks or
so it has been shutting itself down after about an hour (only seems to happen
if I am not using it). I am running Windows XP on it. The first time it
happened, I had the computer on my bed and it shut down when I was using it.
I felt the bottom of it and it was very hot so I assumed it was over heated.
It would not turn back on at first but after I let it cool down for a few
minutes it came back on (no error messages before or after the shutdown).
Ever since then, it seems to just randomly shut down if left idle for about
an hour or so. I do not get error messages when it comes back on and when I
turn it back on it starts up normally, as if I had shut it down in the normal
way. The fans are not blocked and a lot of the time when I feel the computer,
it doesn't even seem hot. I have run spy sweeper software and norton
antivirus but neither one has detected anything. Is there anything I can do
to fix this?

I would suspect a hardware problem and send it for repair.
Just to make sure, you should reinstall your laptop from scratch, ie wipe
the system disk. Manufacturers usualy do installation from an image and you
may have received a restore CD with your laptop.

BTW, it is not good practice to use laptop on the bed because the air
circulation ducts get blocked when laptop sinks into the bed.
