On Friday, I installed a Windows XP upgrade, from Windows
98, on my Compaq Prosignia (Pentium III). Things have
been great for a few days. Today my husband logged off
his user ID & the system shut down. (Well that's what he
said - I wasn't here.) He said everything looked normal.

Tonight I went to log on, check mail, do other stuff,
etc. and when I turned the CPU back on, the Compaq screen
came up, the power button lit up and the disk light went
on.

Then I got a black screen with a message that Windows was
unable to start. The message said new software or
hardware may be the reason. I had the option of using
the arrow keys to scroll up to Safe Mode, Safe Mode with
Network and Safe Mode with Prompts, but the note
recommended I use the last successful configuration which
it specified was Normal Windows Startup. It began a 30
second countdown to that. When it got to 0 nothing
happened. Restarting the machine & trying the other
options didn't work either. It just stopped.

Upon closer examination, I realized the disk light on the
CPU went out as soon as the black screen opened. I
attempted to reboot with the CD ROM - Same thing as
before. What has happened & what should I do?

THNX!
Maggie
