Problem with blank CD-Rs

When I put a blank CD-R into my CD-R drive and try to open it, it says
"Please insert a disk into drive E:." I know it knows that there is a disk
in it because the E: icon in My Computer changes to a CD-R icon, plus I can
right click on it and click properties and see all the correct information
about it (free space: 703 MB). But when I double click or try to drag a file
into it it says "Please insert a disk into drive E:." I tried it with
several other blank disks and got the same result. I tried it with a disk
from the same package but with something already written on it and it worked
fine. Please help me.

I have found this to be the case on some PCs where the user has also
installed 3rd party CD or DVD applications. These include Nero and Stomp
Record Now.

WIndows does not recognise the media when you open up Explorer, and the XP
cd writing wizard will not open. However if you open up Nero or Stomp, they
identify and write to the medium without any problems.

If you have Nero or Stomp, just open up that application.

The reason this happens is that many 3rd party software disables the IMAPI
burning engine so that their packet writing software does not conflict.
When you right click on the drive in My Computer there should be a Recording
Tab. Check the option to Enable CD recording on this drive. You should
make sure you have no other burning software installed that would conflict
with this setting. If you do not see a Recording Tab then your drive might
not be detected as a recorder.. but we can cross that bridge when we come to
it.
