Hi,

I'm having a problem trying to use a USB wireless network adapter on XPE.
I use Edimax EW-7117U. I installed it successfully using most-updated XP
drivers.
the device works great and I can connect using the Wireless
Zero-Configuration service and by using the OEM config tool. it even
remembers the WEP key (a problem that was reported in the NG before).

But... each time I restart the machine I get a problem. the problem comes in
two ways:
1. when windows is loading and I can see the splash wallpaper I get Winlogon
error and afterwards a BSOD wish "The Windows Logon Process system process
terminated"...
2. windows loads fine. the NIC is not recognized and in Device Manager it
shows with a (!) sign saying the device cannot start (Error code 10).

if I start windows while the USB adapter is unplugged- it loads fine and
works OK when plugging it again after windows is up.

I have no problem working with other USB devices and I've already tried my
second USB port.
I'm not sure if it is related but I'm using an EWF-RAM protection.

any advice is most needed,

thanks,

YaronM

Hi Yaron,

Someone reported similar BSOD problem with USB and EWF recently. I personally have not seen this.
Anyhow EWF filter driver instance is loaded for USB disks (more precisely volume) when they are present during the boot time and
later, if not configured to be protected they are not used. But there can be a problem with this.

SP2 EWF should solve this problem.

BTW:
What EWF QFE version do you use?
What USB driver stack QFE's do you use?

Your case with NIC is strange.
Anyhow for test it is possible to reconfigure manually by using regedit to which volumes EWF filter driver is applied as UpperFilter
instead of general to whole class which covers all volumes present.

Best regards,
Slobodan

Hi Slobodan,

I'm not sure about your suggestion about the EWF because a NIC is not
supposed to be recognized as a volume. anyhow, I added the device manually
after FBA ran. I tryed disabling the EWF and it didn't help.
I use EWF RAM Registry- Based on hotfix Q823025
the USB Root Hub - Hotfix Q822603

I'm wondering if maybe the problem is device specific to the model/brand I
use...
did anyone ever usd a Wireless USB NIC in XPe ? whice model worked for you?

regarding SP2- I've downloaded the SP2 preview and maybe I'll try setting it
up on another machine to check its compatibility with my problem.

thanks,

YaronM

Hi Yaron,

Sorry, you are right. And currently I have no idea why I wrote that answer, probably for some obscure reason at the moment I thought
that you had USB disk connected and not USB NIC :(
Since you have new USB drivers I have no idea what to suggest at the moment.

Regards,
Slobodan

Thanks anyway :)

Hi, Yaron
I tested 3COM
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase&sku=3CRWE254G72
3ComR OfficeConnectR Wireless 11g USB Adapter. There is also "b" (11 Mb) USB
dongle
http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase&sku=3CRSHEW696
I installed it on run-time image and it ran pretty good on my XPe box. I
performed several tests with EWF enabled. There were no BSODs related to
this dongle.
But I expected BSODs several times with USB devices during plug-unplug
operation. It's not only dongles, it also USB printers and Bluetooth
devices. I don't know the reasons and possible it can be a thread for
discussion in NG
