Back up and tell us why you're running the Command SFC /SCANNOW in the first
place?
place?
Susan Rice said:I ran at a DOS command prompt the command SFC /SCANNOW
It says some of the operating system files are corrupted
and need to be replaced, and asks me to insert my
Windows XP CD, which I do.
But then it keeps coming up with the message "Please
insert your Windows XP CD" (not exact wording), which
is already in there, and I click "Retry". It seems to
be happy for a moment, but it appears every time it comes
across a file that needs to be repaired it asks me to
insert the Windows XP CD, even though it's already in there,
so I ended up repeatedly clicking "Return" over and over,
(thinking I should get one of those bobbing bird toys that
Homer Simpson used to repeatedly press a key on his keyboard).
And after it finally finished it apparently didn't work, as
when I ran the SFC program again it still complained just as before
that OS files were corrupted.
I also tried putting the Windows XP CD in the other CD drive,
but that didn't make any difference.
One point is my Windows XP CD is SP1, while I have SP2 installed.
So how can I get this system fixed? The computer runs OK, except the
only thing it can't do is a file search. If I click
"Search" in Windows Explorer, and set it up to search for a file,
when I click the go button (also labeled "Search") the CPU jumps
to 100% and the computer becomes unusable. Takes a couple of
minutes to kill the process, or sometimes I just have to press and
hold the power button to switch off the computer.
I booted into safe mode, and it did a file search OK there, then I
went back to regular boot, and it file searched fine for awhile,
then the problem came back.
