I have upgraded my system and have a faster HDD and I want to transfer
the boot drive to the new disk. However, I have had several problems.
On originally transferring files with the HD installation software
(Maxtor) the system apparently worked fine. When I installed some new
hardware, I noticed that the drivers had been stored on the old HDD
(now drive D:). Apparently correcting this would require manually
editing the registry and this is a little beyond my capabilities.
I have since tried recopying the files using Norton Ghost Clone. The
result is no boot.
I have reformatted the new drive and transferred the files again with
Maxtor and I now get no boot from the new drive.
I have no tried xcopy.

Does anyone know how to transfer the Windows XP OS and all files to a
new boot drive so that I can discard the old drive?

Dude,you're basically screwed.With xp's activation crap
you need to install the os fresh & then use the setup
program within xp to transfer your files & settings.Re-
install xp,then when it's done installing, insert your xp
disk.A list of actions will pop up one being "transfer
files & settings".At that point you click that button &
then follow the wizard's instructions.Don't attempt to do
this with 3rd party stuff like maxtor's.Btw you need the
original cd of xp to do this. Also ,set the bios to boot
from cdrom first when installing xp,it will partition &
format for you.

No he doesn't, using PowerQuest Drive image or BootIT NG the old hard drive
can be cloned to the new drive. I have accomplished this with DI numerous
times. It is sometimes necessary to run bootcfg and fixboot from the
Recovery Console. With only the hard drive change, it is unlikely
activation will even be triggered.

when you had copied the data from the old drive to the new drive, did you
have both drives plugged in the pc? if not, ok.
when you have the new faster HD plugged in have you checked the jumpers, set
them to master or cable select. this will allow the drive to be booted. and
then set in Bios for this drive to be seen.

done

this is what I have done with my drive every few months to keep a back up in
case it crashes on me I still have a working system to use.

I have cloned the old disk to the new one using Norton Ghost. I then
removed all HDD's from the system except the new boot drive (Yes, the
jumpers are configured correctly).

On boot with the new drive, the system attempts to boot and gets to
the "Welcome to Windows" screen and hangs.

Using the WinXP install cd, I ran:
FIXMBR
FIXBOOT C:
and finally
CHKDSK /R

The result is the same.

Can anyone help here?

TIA
