I've been backing up files to another PC on my home network and had occasion
last week to try to restore some files. I could not get any files to
restore. I either get a message that "File contains unrecognizable data &
cannot be used." or after going the through the entire process using the
restore wizard, the utility aborts.

After the unsucessful attempt to restore the file, I began checking other
..bkf files and so far have not been able to restore anything.

Both are running WinXP and as far as I know are current with updates (both
have automatic updates running, I believe.

Did you take a look at your backup logs to make sure you were getting good
backups? Were you using 'verify' ?
It's possible that you're trying to back up a boatload of data across a less
than optimal network connection. Do you have a removable hard drive (USB,
firewire) that you can use to test with?
