Problem restoring backup to new PC

Recently when putting an old Me system PC out of service, I backed up all
data files to CDs to restore to a new XP(MCE) PC. However now I cannot
restore to the new PC for use later because all the files are "read-only"
which always happens on a back up.
Is there a way to put the files in an editable archive mode when copying on
the new PC or do I have to go back and do a file transfer with Laplink,
crossover cable other file transfer technique?

Thanks

You can either put the files on the pc then set them to r/w (properties,
uncheck the RO box) or use the attribute command in a DOS window.

To avoid this in the future, the easiest way is to zip the files up
(which
saves space anyway) and then save the zip file to the CD. When you
unzip the files, they will be as they were in the beginning ... or
something
like that ;-)
