Problem removing software from Control Panel, remove..

I am upgrading a software package that requires that I
first remove the old version. When I tried this from the
remove software menu selection under control panel, it
just blinks and nothing happens. I have now removed the
software by deleting the folder itself, but it is still
listed as being installed and taking up huge space when I
look at the control panel again. How can I remove all
traces of the old package? Thank you
