Problem printing X of Y footers

I have a 22-page document that added the X of Y footer to. Onscreen it looks fine, but when I print my footers look like 1 of 1, 2 of 2, 3 of 3, etc. I even opened another MS Word document and added the X of Y and got the same thing. The strangest thing is that I haven't had this problem before nor changed any settings that should have caused it. HELP ME, PLEASE!
