I got a new reburbished computer with Windows XP. I turned it on and it came
up where I had to click on a User Account...well the ones one there are
requiring a password! And of course I don't know what the passwords are....
How can I get past this so I can log on then change user accounts, etc???

Thanks!

JillinPA,

Ask the person you bought it from. It should have been formatted before
selling to you so I doubt it was a reputable business sale. If so, bring it
back.

Jill,

Even if you hack the password - my suggestion to you is to completely format
the system with the Windows XP CD and install all of the applications and
such back onto it. That is the only way you can ever feel comfortable that
the last user did not leave something on it that should not be on your
system.

All used pcs should be wiped clean an then install the OS you want use
fresh.

Try a blank password. Is it XP Home? If so the default password for
the built in Administrator account is blank. To access it boot into
safe mode by restarting the computer then as the BIOS screen disappears
repeatedly tap the F8 key. Choose safe mode from the advanced options
menu. The administrator account should now be visible on the welcome
screen. Assume the password is blank. If none of that works you can
use this to get by the passwords:

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor

Best though, with a system like that, to do a clean install of the OS.
You don't know what nasties are left on it.
