This is a weird one. I'm running WinXP Pro and it's been working
fine for me. Yesterday, I installed a Hauppauge PVR250 TV
tuner/capture card and things are hosed now. <sigh>

I installed the software that came with the tuner card and while
buggy, the software worked. I then installed the trial version of
"PowerVCR II" by Cyberlink and now my computer is hosed.

I can boot up normally but when it comes time to display the desktop,
I have the background displayed but no desktop. No icons, no "start"
menu, no status bar, nothing. Right-clicking on the desktop does
nothing, Ctrl-Esc does nothing, etc. The only thing that works is
the task box (via ^Alt-Esc). It's dead in the water.

I've already run my WinXP install disk and pressed "r" to repair and
that's done nothing. I've logged in as my wife (she has an account
on this box) and still nothing.

It looks like explorer.exe isn't running so I tried running that from
the task box, nothing.

Short of re-installing WinXP, does anyone have any suggestions for
me? Thanks.

Just a quick question...

Does the mouse cursor appear on screen after start up...

If so... it sounds to me almost as if the desktop has been enlarged some
ways, or the resolution has dropped, so as you only see the center of the
desktop enlarged over the whole screen area... if you understand my
meaning...

Sinces the start menu is located in the corner of the screen (assuming it is
anyways) you wont see it. but the Task manager appers center when it pops
up, so you can see that.

Yes, the mouse cursor is there. Your theory makes sense but if the
screen has been enlarged beyond the borders of the monitor, how does
one fix this? Thanks..

You can reset your screen's resolution in this case by rebooting the
PC and going through safe mode. Login as Administrator and Windows
will automatically reset the resolution to 600x480. You can now change
the settings yourself and then reboot once more. I suppose you should
undo your DVD changes also before rebooting.

Thank you. I don't remember the admin password on that box,
unfortunately. There's a utility out there that you use to boot from
CD, I think, loads Linux and allows you to change the password. Would
anyone remember where to get that gem? Thanks.
